Gas Rig Explosion in Oklahoma Leaves 5 Workers Dead

On January 22nd, 2018, a gas rig in Oklahoma exploded. This well was bigger than traditional oil rigs, and the explosion caused flames to shoot more than 50 feet into the air. The explosion was so powerful that it caused the derrick, a crane-like machine above the rig, to collapse.

At least one person was injured and taken to a hospital for treatment and five others lost their lives. Emergency responders found 17 people who had been working on the oil rig, but five were not initially located. Search and rescue teams were able to find their remains after the rig cooled down from the fire and the area was deemed stable. The Occupational Health & Safety Commission (OSHA) will be the lead investigating agency for this explosion, as it was a workplace accident.

Our firm provides experienced legal assistance to clients injured in fires and explosions on gas rigs and oil stations. While the oil and gas industry is notoriously complex, contractors and drilling operation companies still maintain a responsibility to abide by federal oil and gas regulations. If they fail, and an explosion or other accident occurs, they may be held liable in court for the resulting damages and losses. Companies also have a responsibility to provide a reasonably safe working environment for employees. Although the oil and gas industry is known to be dangerous, employers must eliminate any potential hazards and enforce safety measures to protect the wellbeing of workers.
