On January 22nd, 2018, a gas rig in Oklahoma exploded. This well was bigger than traditional oil rigs, and the explosion caused flames to shoot more than 50 feet into the air. The explosion was so powerful that it caused the derrick, a crane-like machine above the rig, to collapse.
At least one person was injured and taken to a hospital for treatment and five others lost their lives. Emergency responders found 17 people who had been working on the oil rig, but five were not initially located. Search and rescue teams were able to find their remains after the rig cooled down from the fire and the area was deemed stable. The Occupational Health & Safety Commission (OSHA) will be the lead investigating agency for this explosion, as it was a workplace accident.
