One such device is called the laparoscopic power morcellator. This is used for several kinds of procedures, chief among them a hysterectomy. The morcellator is used to break down larger masses of tissues into smaller parts; this is especially useful for treating uterine fibroids, which are not uncommon for older women. The broken-down tissue is then captured by a specialized vacuum.

Risks of Laparoscopic Power Morcellators

When the machine is cutting the tissue, it could spread that tissue around the abdominal cavity. This could mean that instead of removing all of the dangerous tissue - which could be cancerous - the patient could be at risk of growing cancer cells at a different site. This could lead to further treatment being needed, including more invasive surgery, and a more serious diagnosis if it leads to cancer.

Some versions of the morcellator use a small bag or pouch to collect the discarded tissue for later testing; this prevents the spread of any remnants of the removed tissue from being distributed elsewhere. However, the majority of devices in use do not have this feature.
